Course Description

This course will survey basic concepts in cell physiology. In addition, a survey of basic anatomical terminology will precede a study of the histology, gross anatomy and function of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems. Use will be made of the case-study method to achieve the desired understanding and integration of physiologic principles. The laboratory portion of the course will include use of human cadavers to study the anatomy of the systems indicated above. AAS: Life science (laboratory science) elective.

BIOL 1564 with a grade of C or better, or appropriate high school introductory anatomy and physiology course

Explanation of Course Alignment

Prerequisite: CHEM 1504 or one year of high school chemistry with a grade of C; or both CHEM 1614 and CHEM 1624. Must be completed prior to taking this course. This course will survey basic concepts in cell physiology. In addition, a survey of basic anatomical terminology will precede a study of the histology, gross anatomy and function of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems. Use will be made of discussion boards and class activities to achieve the desired understanding and integration of physiologic principles. The laboratory portion of the course will include use of models and dissection to study the anatomy of the systems indicated above. Please note: BIOL 1534 or BIOL 1564 are recommended for students with no previous biology coursework. AAS: Life science (laboratory science) elective.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop a vocabulary of appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to anatomy and physiology.
  2. Be able to explain the cell theory as it relates to the human body.
  3. Recognize tissues and the relationship between histology and biological functions.

Course Policies

Participation: This course meets twice a week. Attendance is mandatory as attending class and being an active participant are crucial to your success in this course. If you miss class, you will be at a severe disadvantage. It is YOUR responsibility, not mine, to find out what work you may have missed.

Make-up policy:

Labs-Late study guides (due on test day) and lab reports (due following week during lab) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Labs will be due at the beginning of your next lab session. You MAY NOT turn in a lab assignment for a lab you did not attend. You will not be able to make up labs due to the schedule. Your lowest lab score will be dropped. If you arrive late for an exam, you will have only the time remaining for the students that were in class on time.  Make-up lecture exams:

  1. will consist of essay questions and must be taken within one week of the assigned test date at the testing center.
  2. will only be available to students if they have an excuse deemed valid by the teacher (i.e. death in the family (death certificate will be requested), car accident (report will be requested), medical (doctors note will be requested), etc. Proof must be provided.
  3. No make-ups for all finals. All finals must be taken at the assigned time.

**Cell phones: Please turn off all electronic devices prior to the start of class / lab to prevent class disruption.

**Pencil (#2) pencil must be used on exams.  None are provided. Color pencils needed for labs.

**Audio recordings: Permission must be granted for audio recordings of lecture and or lab while enrolled in this class. If granted, the student may not share and/or distribute these recordings without the expressed written consent of the instructor.

Code of Conduct

Students need to adhere to the Code of Conduct located in the college catalog (Student Code of Conduct - Kankakee Community College).

Laboratory Safety

Students are expected to comply with the KCC Science Laboratory Safety Rules at all times. These rules will be discussed during the first lab meeting and each student will sign an acknowledgement of receipt and understanding. Students who do not comply with the safety rules will be asked to leave the lab and will receive no credit for that day’s work.

Withdrawals

When it is necessary to withdraw from a course or from the college, a student may do so on or before the withdrawal date without receiving a punitive final grade. Students should use Change of Schedule forms which are available in Student Services. Students may submit Change of Schedule forms to Student Services or through the mail, but they must be postmarked no later than the withdrawal date. No withdrawals are allowed by phone. To determine the last date to withdraw with a grade of “W” in this course, log into KCConnect and click on “my registration statement” under Academic Profile.

Email Policy

Non-Attendance/Non-Participation

KCC complies with state law and federal financial aid policy. If you receive an attendance grade of F or are institutionally withdrawn from a course, it will affect your eligibility for financial aid. (1) You must attend at least one class, or participate at least once for an online course (logging in without participation is not attending), by the 10th day of 16 week courses or within the first 10% of shorter term classes. Non-attendance will result in an attendance grade of F. (2) If you have excessive absences and no reasonable chance of passing the course at midterm (or after), your instructor may give you a WX grade and have you institutionally withdrawn from the course.
